Sarnia Industries Art Fund Purchase, 1979

Born and raised in Quebec City, Jean-Paul Lemieux studied at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal from 1926 to 1929, where he studied under famed Canadian artist Edwin Holgate. Lemieux then taught at the École des beaux-arts in Quebec City, from 1937 to 1967.

Considered one of the foremost Quebec painters of the 20th century, Lemieux is particularly recognized for his paintings of the desolate, seemingly infinite spaces of the landscapes outside Quebec City. Yet in the 1940’s and 1950’s, the artist painted in fresco style that described the attitudes of the people he painted and his organization of subject and space was at that time influenced by  early Québec folk art.
