Gift of Chantal Laberge, Verdun, Quebec, 1993

William Ronald graduated from the Ontario College of Art in Toronto in 1951 and began working as a display artist for the Robert Simpson Company department store, where he was able to influence store owners to pair their furniture displays with works of abstracts art, in order to expose Canadians to non-representational art.

Ronald studied under the great New York Abstract Expressionist painter Hans Hofmann, and brought those practices back with him to Canada. He met with other abstract painters Harold Town, Oscar Cahen and others who were instrumental in forming the group Painters Eleven. Ronald exhibited with the group in Toronto and New York, and eventually left the group in 1960 to pursue a career in radio broadcasting for the CBC.
